+One Campaign

What: A one week registration campaign to drive incremental registration growth and incentive participants to recruit.

 When: Jan 22-28

Target Audience: Current Relayers who fit into one of two groups:

 - Previous participants who have not yet signed up, to encourage them to sign up NOW
 - Currently registered participants, to get them to invite new people to join their event/team

Incentives: The top 12 events in the country with the greatest % of growth in number of participants during the challenge will win a giant Relay For Life inflatable chair. Additionally, the top campus and top community event nationwide will earn RFL blinky pins for all registered participants at their event! We have 8 areas in North Central. I would LOVE to have 1 chair per area. I think we can do it! Who’s with me?

Email Cadence: Nationwide emails will be sent at the start and conclusion of the campaign. A local email message will be uploaded into the EMC of all websites for local events to customize and send during the middle of the campaign week.

Social Strategy: There will be two social media messages shared on the main Relay For Life social channels during the campaign. We encourage all events to share those messages directly from the national channel to their local channels, and include and local messaging with it at that time.

New this year: Challenge eCards!: At the start of the campaign, a new page will be released on RelayForLife.org that will contain 4 new eCards that Relayers can send to help recruit! Two of the eCards will focus have a JOIN MY TEAM message, one will focus on asking SURVIVORS TO JOIN MY TEAM, and one will highlight ASKING TO START A NEW TEAM FOR THE EVENT. These ecards will be featured in the nationwide email message that launches the campaign.

Challenge Fine Print: The top 12 Relay For Life events with the largest percentage growth of participants registered online between Monday, January 22 at 12:01 am CST and Sunday, January 28 at 11:59 pm CST will be eligible to win an giant inflatable Relay For Life chair. The top campus event and the top community event in the country will also earn Relay For Life blinky pins for all event participants, in addition to their chair. Events must have a minimum of 10 participants at the start of the campaign on January 22nd , and reach 100 participants registered online by Sunday, January 28 at 11:59 pm CST to qualify. This is only open to online registered participants.

New Year's Resolutions... Survivor and Caregiver Style!

It’s a new year and what is the most time honored tradition for January?

Resolutions, of course!

In addition to adopting a healthier lifestyle including eating more healthy foods, getting more exercise (any movement you love counts! Can you say Dancing? Walking? Shopping? Yes! They all help contribute to relieving stress, lowering blood pressure, improving overall health (including less cancer risk and even helping with diabetes!)

Let’s make 2018 our year to add some new resolutions to our Relay Life. Remember our Survivors and caregivers. Start in January to develop your list of survivors from your 2017 year. Here are some helpful ways to ensure your 2018 Relay For Life will have increased numbers of survivor and caregiver participants!

  • Invite your survivors and caregivers to your kick off and have a special recognition planned
  • Remember your survivors and caregivers during holidays: Valentine’s Day, Easter (and other religious holidays celebrated in your area),May Day,4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas (and Hanukah)
  • Determine who among your survivor and caregiver list might be veterans and remember them on appropriate days.
  • Invite survivors and caregivers to be a part of your leadership team. Their input can be invaluable
  • “Stay in touch” by using cards, post cards, email, phone calls, texts and what about personal greeting on their face book walls!
  • Ask for opinions of your survivors and caregivers. Find out what would make their Relay experience more memorable, comfortable, fun and simply “better”.
  • Offer rides to Committee and Team Captain Meetings

I know once you start thinking of ways to better engage your survivors and caregivers your own lists will far exceed this short list. We spend so much energy on our mission and it IS working. Cancer deaths are down (meaning survivor numbers are increasing) It is now time to remember our growing number of survivors and caregivers in everything Relay from the planning stages to fund raisers to the actual event day.

Your challenge:

  • Create your own list for your survivors and caregivers for your event
  • Implement one new action item each month
  •  Create a survivor/caregiver committee (not simply one person who might handle the survivor dinner)
